Simbang Gabi
Simbang Gabi, meaning “Night Mass” or “Dawn Mass” in English, is a beloved nine-day Filipino Catholic tradition of novena Masses leading up to Christmas, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, with roots in Spanish colonial times for farmers to attend before work. It’s also known as Misa de Gallo (Rooster’s Mass) and involves early morning (or sometimes evening) services, culminating with traditional Filipino foods like bibingka and puto bumbong and star-shaped lanterns (parols) signifying faith and community.
